MIFD is a legal municipality under the laws of the State of Connecticut. It encompasses Enders Island and all of the Island lying south of the Gate House and an area just outside the Gate House extending to the west, and north of Schoolhouse Road. It is a part of the Town of Stonington. MIFD levies property taxes on real estate, motor vehicles and trailers to cover costs for the following: fire protection, maintenance of roads and rights of way, garbage and trash collection, maintenance of the Ice Pond, and traffic control and maintenance of recreation areas. Budgets and contracts for these purposes are administered by committees appointed by the MIFD Board of Directors. MIFD owns the park area located near the north end of the Ice Pond.
Those eligible to vote at annual and special meetings are any elector in the Town of Stonington who lives within the District and any citizen of the age of 18 years or more, who, jointly or severally, is liable to the District for taxes assessed against him on an assessment of not less than $1000 on the last completed grand list of the District, or who would be so if not entitled to an exemption provided by law. |
